CHAPTER 17

Athena

“WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? You’re supposed to be helping me fall in love with the professor, not scare her away from me!” I said when, returning to my room, I found Ecato sitting on my bed.

“I was!” Ecato said, seemingly annoyed that I didn’t believe her.

“How, by treating her rudely and ruining our partnership?” I asked.

“No, of course not,” she said, frowning. “Has she said anything to you about that?”

“No. She’s a professional, she would never bring it up in a working context,” I said, indignant.

Ecato folded her arms on her chest. “So what I’m hearing is that you were the one bothered by my questions. Why?” She asked with an annoying pout printed on her face.

“Because... Because..” I wasn’t really sure how to continue the sentence. “The point is that, if you were acting under my sister’s orders, you were doing a poor job putting her on the spot like that,” I said, trying to muster my indignation back.

“But I wasn’t!”

“Mmm?”

“I am trying to help you, while also executing Aphrodite's orders,” she said waving her arms in the air in one of her characteristically dramatic gestures.

“And how would asking so many probing questions be of any help to me or my sister?”

“You’re lonely,” she said.

It hit me like a brick in the stomach.

“You are and it’s very obvious to me and your sister and to everyone else.”

I didn’t know I was so easy to read that even the simplest of beings could find my weaknesses at a glance. How many had been able to tell? I felt naked, not just in front of Ecato, but as if I had walked bare for millennia and nobody had dared approach me about it. Was I that transparent?

“Why do you think she made you participate in the bet in the first place?” Ecato insisted.

As my anger mounted, I wanted to tell her that it wasn’t true. I wanted to tell her that I had my sisters, my father and a long list of Gods who admired me and would appreciate my company. But while the former may be true we both knew that the latter wasn’t. How many of those Gods had whispered pitifully behind my back?

“I want you to stop feeling lonely,” Ecato added simply. “And I was trying to figure out if she could be the person that could help you. If she was in love nothing would scare her off of you.”

My anger swelled again, burning like acid through my stomach.

“How dare you?” I said, my tone was as low as a whisper and as powerful as an howl.

“What did I say wrong?” Her innocent look was like wind blowing on fire, leaving the nearby trees in a flame of ashes. “You little vapid creature, what do you know?” I growled. “Had your queen taught you anything about love, she would have told you it has nothing to do with tests.”

“Why are you mad at me? I was trying to help..”

“Leave my chambers, now.”

I saw the tears in her eyes, and I felt the pang of guilt following my anger.
